Yesterday was the historic Neptune Day.
This is an SAS traditional celebration for recognizing those on the ship (which is everyone) who will cross the equator (by ship) for the first time. We were woken up at 8 am by banging pots and pans, singing and yelling and the entire staff, professors, and crew dressed up in white robes with paint on their faces. There definitely were no classes for this special day. After a quick breakfast, we made it onto the 7th (top) deck by the pool. There was a summons of the King and Queen of Neptune who slowed appeared and was played by Captain Jeremy and one of the nurses. They were both painted completely in neon green, wore grass skirts and the Captain had a straw blonde headdress and a crown. It was awesome. After taking their thrown, the procedures began. Those who wanted to receive a certificate for crossing the equator were drenched with a very blue liquid known as fish gut. Then they had to kiss a dead fish, bow to the King and Queen and kiss the King’s large ring. Then you jump into the pool to wash off. You are knighted by the executive dean for recognizing that you have officially passed the equator. It was a blast. Kristina and I did this together (we smelled horrible) and after awhile went to scrub the smell out.
But before this occurred, many kids went through the tradition of shaving their heads. I’m not just talking about guys either. There was a bunch of girls who shaved their heads. Among the brave and the few was my roommate, Kristina Zack. If anyone could pull off a bald head, it would be that girl. It was a great day to celebrate and though I did consider it, I still have my curly locks intact.
The day continued with celebration and a BBQ on the top deck for dinner with live music. It was so much fun with all my newly bald friends. Unfortunately, we didn’t actually cross the equator till a few hours ago-today. Which is why I am updating my blog now; plus, I wanted to give a little time between my entry on Morocco and now. Please continue to e-mail me, I love hearing from ALL of you. I’m going to try to send a photo or put it on my blog when we get to Cape Town. Everything else on the ship is well, lots of schoolwork, along with lots of distractions for hanging out with newly made friends. For the most part, everything is great, just a little less hair and a lot more bald heads bopping around. :-)
