Poked, prattled, and cleared of parasites

My memories of visiting the Doctor’s office as a child always seemed to be a more positive than negative. I was a pretty healthy child, a broken arm in second grade (I still hold the “satisfactory” grade against my teacher that school quarter, because it was writing arm). There was a slightly torn ACL in high school, but overall the visits included getting Disney or Barbie themed Band-Aids and lollipops. Who doesn't love lollipops?

My final medical exams were anything but these experiences. There was a lot of waiting, more waiting; and then seeing the doctor for maybe fifteen minutes. Pooping at the hour when they tell you that you need to give a sample. I will definitely not miss giving stool samples to be checked for amoebas and parasites. Usually there wasn't time to go drink some coffee or eat prunes beforehand. Prunes, a specialty. Sometimes waiting over an hour for each appointment and general being run around to the different offices like children, without any cool Band-Aids or lollipops. Disappointing, but perhaps I am just growing up.
Fortunately, all my tests come back negative (no amoebas or giardiasis for this PCV!) and in some ways it feels good to be one step closer to finishing my service. Before being swabbed, drawn and x-rayed (teeth), I was able to celebrate and organize a 4th of July event with every volunteer in country at the beach!
Through much organization and planning, twenty-five of schlepped to Cucu beach at Tortuga Verde Hotel to swim, eat fried fish, cook, eat some more, drink a tad bit and simply enjoy each other’s company for the two nights. We tried to get fireworks, but it didn't end up working out and it rained anyways. But, it was great to get know some of the newer volunteers before my group finish their service.
Besides traveling, I have been keeping myself busy making pancakes with my host family and goofing off with my host sisters (see photosJ) and hosting other PCV’s friends and family in Ataco nearby which is always entertaining. The most exciting news is that my mom (Gail Rosenberg Zucker) and I have booked flights to meet each other in Mexico!
We have no return flights as of yet, so we may never come back! I am looking forward to traveling, but who better to spend the last leg of my trip but my mom?
I know it will be a great adventure for both of us. Can we say thin tortillas? Yum!

Until next time...
